Hypnotherapy
First, a note on the word “Hypnotherapy” — a term that can sometimes feel intimidating.
Please know that during a session, you remain in complete control at all times. This is not stage hypnosis. You can talk, move, think, and act naturally throughout our time together.
Because our inner experiences are often drowned out by the noise, activity, and demands of everyday life, it takes time, space, and permission to quiet the mind and listen to our deeper impressions. We often wisely know more than we expect, but simply lack access to it until we are able to get quiet and focus deeply.
What to Expect in a Session
A typical hypnotherapy or guided visualization session is designed to gently transition you from outer noise to inner quiet, moving through three distinct phases:
1. Turning Inward
We usually begin with a body scan and progressive relaxation exercise. Once relaxed and focused inward, you will be invited to notice and track—without judgment—the images, impressions, or sensations present in your body. In Jungian psychotherapy, this is known as "active imagination," where we actively commune with the parts of our consciousness that communicate through imagery and sense impression. Carl Jung taught that this image-based realm is where each of our individual wisdom and the collective wisdom of humans and more-than-human beings resides.
2. Supported Exploration
Once we have accessed this state, we bring conscious awareness and guided inquiry to better understand the personal meanings communicated through imagery, impression, and sensation. Depending on your unique goals, we may weave in specialized therapeutic techniques:
Parts-Work: We use this to understand the positive intentions behind the habits, fears, or characteristics you wish to shed. Bringing understanding to these parts naturally fosters self-compassion, making it much easier to choose actions and beliefs in alignment with health and healing.
Gestalt Techniques: If desired, we can use these tools to safely bring thoughts, emotions, or words to the surface to be heard, expressed, or rehearsed.
Compassionate Witnessing: If you are facing a difficult decision, we use observation to clarify inner conflicts and gently navigate scenarios where you feel torn between multiple choices.
Hypnotherapy techniques work well to support Inner Child work.
3. Spiritual & Symbolic Growth
For those seeking a deeper sense of meaning or a connection to the Spiritual, the Unconscious, or the Divine, this work helps cultivate your symbolic perception. Learning to dialogue with your inner imagery can free you from rigid, black-and-white thinking, resolve internal conflicts, and lead to a richer, more authentic life.
After Your Session: Most people leave feeling deeply relaxed and hopeful. Whether you take away one profound realization or many, give yourself permission to rest and practice gentle self-care. It is highly recommended to allow yourself quiet time for integration afterward. You might choose to journal, draw, take a walk, or listen to music. Some clients like to find a tangible anchor—such as a small stone to carry in their pocket or a meaningful word written on a card—to act as a daily reminder of their insights.
An Alternative to Hypnotherapy – Image-Assisted Techniques
If you are interested in working with the Images, but don't feel comfortable with the idea of hypnotherapy, please let me know. Artwork and visual imagery offer a beautiful, alternative gateway to your inner world. Using gentle, accessible methods like collage work, Oracle or Art card decks, drawing, or painting, you can allow a visual image to help tell the story of how you feel. This approach bypasses the analytical mind to bring profound insights into your self-talk, values, desires, and personal power.
